What Is Elevation (Altitude)? How Is It Measured?

Elevation — also called altitude — is the vertical height of a point above mean sea level. Sea level is taken as the zero reference (0 metres), and the elevation of a hill, a city, or a stretch of terrain tells you how far above that zero point it sits. Mount Everest, for example, peaks at roughly 8,849 metres, while a coastal town may sit just a few metres above the water.

How Is Elevation Measured?

There are three common ways to determine elevation. Barometric methods read air pressure — this is what the altimeter in a phone or a wristwatch uses, and it needs regular recalibration to stay accurate. GNSS/GPS receivers calculate an ellipsoidal height from satellite signals, which is then corrected with a geoid model to give the orthometric (above-sea-level) height people actually expect. Digital elevation models — open datasets such as SRTM from NASA — store a height value for every grid cell on Earth. Elevation in Metres and Feet

Elevation is most often expressed in metres, but feet are still standard in aviation and in parts of the world that use imperial units. The conversion is simple: 1 metre ≈ 3.28 feet (so a 1,000-metre summit is about 3,281 feet). This tool always shows the result in both units, so you do not have to convert by hand.

Is the elevation above ground or above sea level?

The value shown is altitude above mean sea level (AMSL). It represents the elevation of the terrain at that geographic point, not the height of any structure above it.

How accurate is the elevation data?

The underlying SRTM data has a horizontal resolution of approximately 30 meters and a vertical accuracy of roughly ±16 meters in most regions. Results are accurate enough for route planning, trail analysis, and desktop GIS work, but should not be used as a substitute for precise surveying.
